Young Artists Take the Lead in Making a Difference
A group of former students from California College of the Arts have gotten together to form Art for Obama, an online auction of photographs to raise campaign funds for the Obama/Biden ticket. Campaign finance laws don't allow but a certain amount of money to be given directly to the Obama campaign itself, so funds raised through this auction are being donated instead to MoveOn.org, the progressive online organization that has mobilized support for progressive causes. The auction, which runs through October 10th, seems to be doing well, since at this writing they have raised $12,905 (update: $71,815 as of the Friday, October 10th closing!). These young photographers have attracted a wide range of established talent to the cause, including yours truly, James Welling, Catherine Wagner, Uta Barth, John Pilson, Paul D'Amato, Frank Gohlke, Emmett Gowin, Elinor Carucci, Jim Goldberg, Larry Sultan, Tim Davis, Lois Conner, Katy Grannan, An-My Le (above), Alec Soth, and others who have work available, priced from "no reserve" (some real bargains!) to a few thousand dollars. A good way to purchase first rate work, and support the good cause too.
If you want to see what is available and make a bid (until 5:00 PM on October 10th), go to http://www.artforobama.net. Help fight the McCain/Palin soap opera and acquire some good work. Can't beat that!
